Conference and Autumn Retreat

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE EDGEFIELD! Edit

This conference will have a slower, more contemplative pace than the last ones. We will focus on a few topics and take time to really delve into the subjects. We are celebrating "Midwifery; the joys, the sorrows, the work, the healing", and we hope this day will be one of growth as well as learning.

 NOVEMBER 19, 2003

Conference Topics

First Moments: placental function; the effects of early cord ligation (Pat Edmonds)

When Hello Means Goodbye: helping parents and caregivers deal with stillbirth and the unexpected (Pat Schweibert)

How safe are we? A look at the numbers: a brief analysis of the new Oregon neonatal statistics (Gail hart)

Remembering why we do what we do: media presentation

Questions and Queries; Complications, Conundrums, Tricks and Tips, Case reviews, Hot Topics (two hours with the Grand Midwives Panel -- some of the Northwest's most experienced midwives, accouchers, and baby catchers)!

AND MUCH MORE...

And lunch of course!

And a "stay the night" option!

Join a midwife slumber party, or a late-night gab fest in The Study, or maybe just spend a quiet private time renewing your spirit. This is YOUR time, enjoy it as you wish! A time to relax and rest before the dark days of winter come upon us!

This is another NO POLITICS Midwife Gathering!

Simply a chance to enjoy a learning experience, relax in comfortable surroundings, have a nice lunch, update our skills, get to know each other better, or get to know someone new. We welcome midwives, students, apprentices, and all those involved in childbirth issues.

WE ARE APPROVED FOR SEVEN HOURS CEUs BY THE OREGON MIDWIFERY COUNCIL!

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

You may have to purchase lunch on your own, or else join us with a take-out order from one of the hotel restraunts.

If you plan to register at the door, please give us a courtesy phone call so we can have a syllabus printed for you.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: Full payment in advance by mail, or electronic transfer through PayPal. We can accept credit cards if they are processed through Paypal (see "registration page" for details). Ckeck or money-order preferred to cash -- but there is an ATM in the hotel near the office.

SPLIT PAYMENT OPTION: Pay $30 upon advance registration, with final payment due at the door.

HOW TO REGISTER: by phone, email, online, or mail. But please do it as soon as possible! See "conference registration" button on sidebar for more information.

LOCATION: McMenamins Edgefield Hotel, 2126 SW Halsey Street, Troutdale, Oregon (503) 669-8610

DIRECTIONS: The freeway exit is 16 miles east of downtown Portland. It is 10 miles from the junction of I-205 and I-84. Travel time is appx 20 minutes from downtown Portland and 10 minutes from the junction of 205 and 84 (allow extra time if there is traffic).

From I-5 or from I-205 -- Connect to I-84 EAST (the Banfield freeway) and go EAST (towards "the Dalles"). Take exit 16 / 238th Dr. At the top of the exit turn right on 238th Dr (south) and get into the left lane. Turn left at the first traffic light (this is SW Halsey). Go east on Halsey appx 1/4 mile to Edgefield. Edgefield is on the right... just after the city park playground. Watch for the driveway and rather small sign.

From I-84 --Travelling east or west, take exit 16, follow the directions above going south on 238th ave.

NOTE to out-of-area travellers on I-5 north or south. I'd advise taking the 205 junctions instead of coming into Portland! Your route would be I-5 to I-205, then EAST on I-84. Simple, and much less traffic.

LODGING: Hotel rooms at Edgefield are inexpensive when split with a roommate (four can share a double queen room for about $30 each -- including breakfast -- and wonderful dinner and room packages are also available (check out their "Hammerhead Package" or the "Fall Crush Package"). Reserve your room or your package directly with Edgefield. Contact us if you would like  help finding a room-mate. Or -- consider combining the conference "day" with a mid-week special "evening" for you and your spouse! (it might even be tax deductible!)

The hotel also has a Hostel Wing. The beds are only $20. There are no advance reservations -- and they are only available on a "first come, first serve" basis. But the hotel staff says the hostel rarely fills up on weekday nights, and we can expect there will be space available.

REFUNDS: We understand the uncertainty of midwife schedules and would like to offer a full refund if you have to cancel for a birth. But because the hotel charges us in advance, and allows no reduction, we can refund only $30 of the fee if you cancel after November 14. We will however, carry that amount over for you -- or someone you designate -- indefinitly as a discount for future conferences.

SALES TABLES: Do you have articles for items for sale? Crafts? Books? Baby items, or birth supplies? You are welcome to set up a table! (Contact us for details).

LITERATURE TABLES: YES! Bring your pamphlets and brochures!
